Acute Bronchitis

Acute Bronchitis is an illness that is present in both summer & winter seasons. It brings patients all over the country to the doctor.

Acute Bronchitis Symptoms

Acute bronchitis symptoms may be somewhat varied in presentation, but often include:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue

Acute Bronchitis Treatment

Acute bronchitis can be caused by either a viral or bacterial illness. The viral illness may require a cough suppressant, antihistamines, decongestants, steroids, or breathing treatments. A bacterial infection may require all of the above medications in addition to an antibiotic regimen specifically selected to target the bacteria causing the condition. Typical treatment will vary, but will usually last 5-7 days.

Is Bronchitis contagious?

Yes! During the illness, the patient is considered to be contagious and may need to stay home from work or school for several days. Over the counter cough medicines and decongestants may help, but if these medicines are ineffective after 3 days, more powerful prescribed medications are often necessary.
