UNDERSTANDING THE COMMON CAUSES OF STREP THROAT

Strep throat is highly contagious. While it can occur at any time, it's most common during late winter and early spring. You can get it breathing air after someone with strep coughs or sneezes; touching a surface such as a doorknob and then touching your nose, mouth or eyes; and through sharing food or drink with someone who is carrying the bacteria. Symptoms usually come on quickly. In some cases they may be mild, but they are typically more intense. Symptoms may include a sore throat, trouble swallowing, headache, body aches, chill, swollen lymph nodes, and fever. Note that it's possible to have strep throat and not have a fever. If you have a sore throat but aren't coughing, your doctor will take a sample from your throat to check for strep.

The best precautions you can take to help prevent strep are to wash your hands properly using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, wash dishes in hot, soapy water or in a dishwasher, and don't share drinking glasses or eating utensils.
